In the Western Cape, pools don't freeze, but they do face months of rain, leaves and cold, and many owners stop paying attention once swimming season ends. A little winter care means you won't face a green, swampy pool when the weather warms up again.
Don't drain it
Keep your pool full over winter. Empty pools can be damaged by ground pressure, and the surface can crack or lift. Water also protects the finish.
Give it a final deep clean
- Brush walls, floor and steps thoroughly.
- Vacuum the pool.
- Empty the skimmer and pump baskets.
- Backwash and rinse the filter.
Balance the water
Test and adjust pH (7.2β7.6) and alkalinity before winter. Balanced water protects the pool surface and equipment while it's not in use.
Reduce, don't stop
- Pump: cut run time to roughly 3β4 hours a day in cooler months, rather than switching off completely.
- Chlorine: keep a low but steady chlorine level with regular small doses of a product like MAXCHLOR GOLD. Algae grows more slowly in cold water, but it still grows.
- After big storms, check the water and add a little extra chlorine if needed, as rain dilutes it.
Keep the leaves out
Autumn leaves are a pool's biggest winter problem. They sink, stain the floor and use up chlorine as they rot. A pool cover or net makes a big difference. Without one, scoop leaves regularly and keep baskets empty.
Watch the water level
Heavy winter rain can raise the level above the skimmer. Lower it if needed so the skimmer keeps working.
