Concrete garage and workshop floors take a beating from oil, diesel, brake fluid and tyre marks. Left alone, stains soak in and floors become slippery and unsafe. Regular cleaning keeps the workshop safer and makes a far better impression on customers.
Deal with fresh spills immediately
- Cover fresh oil spills with an absorbent such as sawdust or a commercial absorbent and let it soak up as much as possible.
- Sweep it up and dispose of it correctly. Don't wash oil into stormwater drains.
- Then clean the remaining stain while it's still fresh.
Routine floor cleaning
- Sweep the floor thoroughly to remove dust and grit.
- Apply Garage Floor Cleaner at the recommended dilution.
- Leave it to work for a few minutes. Don't let it dry.
- Scrub with a stiff deck scrub brush, working in sections.
- Rinse and squeegee or wet-vacuum the dirty water away.
Older, ingrained stains
Old oil stains have soaked into the concrete. Apply a stronger degreaser such as Degreaser with Ammonia, scrub hard and let it sit, then rinse. Repeat if needed. Very old stains may lighten rather than disappear completely.
Tyre marks
Black tyre marks on painted or sealed floors usually respond to a degreaser and firm scrubbing. Test first on painted floors to make sure the product doesn't affect the coating.
Prevention
- Use drip trays under vehicles and parts.
- Keep spill kits at every bay.
- Consider sealing or epoxy-coating the floor. Sealed concrete resists stains and is much easier to clean.
