Good wooden furniture can last a lifetime, whether it's a family dining table or a boardroom table that impresses clients. The wrong cleaning (wet cloths, harsh sprays and old rags) dulls and damages it over time. The right routine keeps it looking warm and rich.
Dust first, always
Dust is fine grit. Polishing over it rubs it into the finish and causes tiny scratches. Use a soft yellow duster or a dry microfibre cloth and dust in the direction of the grain.
Cleaning sticky marks
- Wipe with a cloth barely dampened with water and a drop of mild dishwashing liquid.
- Dry immediately. Water left on wood can cause white marks and swelling.
- Avoid all-purpose sprays, bleach and ammonia-based cleaners on wood finishes.
Polishing
- Make sure the surface is clean and dry.
- Apply a small amount of Max Furniture Polish to a clean cloth, not directly onto the wood.
- Work it in with the grain.
- Buff with a second clean, dry cloth until it shines.
Polish every few weeks rather than daily. Too much polish builds up into a cloudy, sticky layer.
Common problems
- White rings from glasses: often moisture trapped in the finish. Coasters prevent them.
- Heat marks: always use placemats under hot dishes.
- Fading: direct sun fades wood. Close blinds in the hottest part of the day.
In the office
Boardroom and reception furniture is the first thing clients see. Add it to the daily cleaning list: dust, wipe fingerprints, and polish weekly. Put coasters on every boardroom table.
