Wet and Dry Vacuums: The Workhorse Every Business Needs

A household vacuum is made for dust and crumbs. A wet and dry vacuum picks up dust, debris and liquids: flooded floors, spilled drinks, mop water, workshop sawdust and building dust. For most businesses it's one of the most useful machines in the cleaning cupboard.

Where wet and dry vacuums earn their keep

Wet or dry: switching properly

Most machines use a filter for dry pick-up and a float valve that stops suction when the tank is full of water. Check your manual, but as a rule:

• For dry work, fit a clean, dry filter (and a dust bag if your model uses one).
• For wet work, remove paper bags and make sure the float is clean and moves freely.
• Never vacuum water with a wet, clogged filter in place. Suction drops and the motor works harder.

Care tips that double the machine's life

• Empty and rinse the tank after every wet job, then leave it open to dry. Standing water smells and corrodes.
• Tap out or wash the filter regularly and let it dry fully.
• Don't pull the machine by the hose or cable.
• Never vacuum flammable liquids, hot ash or hazardous chemicals.
