Isopropyl alcohol (often called IPA or rubbing alcohol) is one of the most versatile products a cleaner can own. It evaporates quickly, leaves no residue and cuts through grease and sticky marks. Here's how to put it to work.
1. Screens and keyboards
Lightly dampen a microfibre cloth (never spray directly) and wipe keyboards, mice and phones. Always check the manufacturer's advice for screens first, and switch devices off before cleaning.
2. Removing sticker residue
Price-tag glue and tape marks lift away with a little IPA on a cloth.
3. Stainless steel shine
A quick wipe removes fingerprints and leaves a streak-free finish on fridges and lift doors.
4. Glass and mirrors
Because it dries so fast, IPA helps to prevent streaks on glass.
5. Whiteboards
Ghosting from old markers disappears with a cloth dampened with IPA.
6. Ink and marker stains
On hard surfaces, IPA will often lift ballpoint and permanent marker. Test on a hidden spot first.
7. Making your own sanitising wipes for hard surfaces
Many businesses decant IPA into labelled spray bottles for quick hard-surface wipe-downs between users.
Safety first
- IPA is flammable. Keep it away from flames, heaters and sparks.
- Use in a well-ventilated area and store with the lid tightly closed.
- Wear gloves for extended use, as it dries out the skin.
- Don't use it on varnished wood, some plastics or painted finishes without testing.
- Keep it out of reach of children and never drink it.
