Walk down any supermarket aisle and you'll see 500ml spray bottles of cleaner at premium prices. Most of what you're paying for is water, plastic and packaging. Professional cleaners do it differently: they buy concentrates in bulk and decant.

How decanting works

1. Buy your cleaner in a 5-litre container.
2. Dilute it according to the label into a clean, labelled trigger bottle.
3. Refill as needed from the bulk container.

One 5L concentrate can fill many spray bottles, often bringing the cost per bottle down dramatically.

Choosing the right sprayer

• Trigger sprayers with adjustable nozzles switch between a fine mist (glass, air freshener) and a jet (toilets, grout).
• Foaming nozzles make the product cling, which is great for degreasers on vertical surfaces.
• Bottle pumps fit onto 5L containers for clean, accurate dispensing of hand soap and dishwashing liquid.
• Atomisers give a fine fragrance mist for air fresheners.

Golden rules of decanting

• Label every bottle with the product name and dilution. Unlabelled bottles are a safety risk.
• Never mix products in the same bottle, and rinse bottles before switching products.
• Never use old cold-drink bottles for chemicals.
• Replace sprayers when they start to drip or clog.
