A dishwasher should save you time, not create more work. If you're getting cloudy glasses, food bits or white film, the fix is usually simple.
Use the right detergent
Never put dishwashing liquid in a dishwasher: it creates a flood of foam. Dishwashers need a low-foaming auto dish powder designed for machine washing. Bulk powder is also far cheaper per wash than tablets.
Scrape, don't rinse
Scrape food scraps into the bin, but don't pre-rinse everything. Modern detergents need a little soil to work on.
Load it properly
- Glasses and cups on the top rack, facing down.
- Plates on the bottom, facing the centre spray arm.
- Don't block the spray arms with tall pans or boards.
- Mix cutlery handles up and down so pieces don't nest together.
Monthly maintenance
- Clean the filter. Twist it out and rinse away trapped food.
- Check the spray arms for blocked holes.
- Wipe the door seals where grime builds up.
- Top up rinse aid and salt if your machine uses them.
Commercial kitchens
Restaurant and canteen machines run many cycles a day. Using a consistent, correctly dosed auto dish powder protects the machine and keeps results consistent for health inspections.
