Brooms and brushes are the most basic cleaning tools around, but choosing the right one makes a surprising difference. Use a soft broom outdoors and you'll be sweeping all day. Use a stiff one on a polished floor and you'll just push dust around.
Soft bristles: indoors and smooth floors
Fine, soft bristles catch dust, hair and light debris on tiles, vinyl, laminate and sealed wood. Perfect for offices, shops and homes.
Stiff bristles: outdoors and rough surfaces
Thicker, stiffer bristles move heavy dirt, leaves, sand and gravel on concrete, paving and driveways. They're also great for scrubbing.
Hygiene brooms
In food factories, kitchens and clinics, hygiene brooms with sealed heads and aluminium handles are easier to clean and don't harbour bacteria. Colour-coded versions keep each area separate.
Specialist brushes
- Scrubbing brushes for grout, tiles and outdoor furniture
- Toilet brushes (keep one per toilet, and replace regularly)
- Feather dusters for delicate surfaces, blinds and high shelves
- Dustpan sets: a good rubber lip on the pan makes all the difference
Make your broom last
- Hang brooms up so the bristles don't bend.
- Wash the head in warm soapy water now and then and let it dry completely.
- Replace when the bristles splay or wear down.
