Whether it's a beach house in Hermanus or a family cottage up the West Coast, holiday homes often sit closed up for months. Before the summer crowds arrive, a proper pre-season clean makes all the difference.
1. Air it out
Open every window and door. Closed-up homes get musty quickly, especially near the sea.
2. Check for damp and mould
Look behind curtains and furniture, in cupboards and around windows. Treat mould spots promptly (see our mould guide) and fix the source of any leak.
3. Dust and wash everything
- Shake out rugs and wash curtains
- Wash all linen and towels, even if they look clean
- Dust light fittings, fans and high shelves
4. Kitchen reset
- Clean the fridge and switch it on early
- Wash crockery that's been sitting in cupboards
- Check for pests and expired pantry items
5. Bathrooms
Run all taps and flush toilets to clear stale water, then give everything a full clean.
6. Outdoors and pool
Sweep decks, clean outdoor furniture and get the pool water balanced well before guests arrive.
7. Stock up
Leave a well-stocked cleaning cupboard so guests (and you) can handle spills during the season.
