As the weather warms up, the braai season is officially on. Nothing beats a weekend braai with friends, but a greasy grid and a stained patio can take the shine off. Here's how to keep everything braai-ready.
Cleaning the grid
- Clean while warm. After cooking, while the grid is still warm (not hot!), scrape off the worst residue with a wire brush.
- Soak: for a deep clean, soak the grid in hot soapy water.
- Scrub with steel wool or a heavy-duty scourer.
- For baked-on carbon, a grill & oven cleaner works wonders. Follow the label, wear gloves, and rinse thoroughly before the next use.
- Dry and lightly oil the grid to prevent rust.
The braai itself
- Remove cold ash regularly. It holds moisture and causes rust.
- Wipe down the outside of gas braais with a degreaser.
- Check gas connections before the season starts.
Patios and paving
- Sweep with a stiff outdoor broom.
- Treat fat drips on paving quickly with a degreaser and scrubbing brush.
- Rinse with a bucket rather than a hosepipe to save water.
Waste
Heavy-duty refuse bags handle bones, packaging and leftovers without splitting. Keep a bin with a lid nearby to deter flies and pets.
