The microwave is probably the most-used and least-cleaned appliance in the kitchen, especially the shared one in the office. Splatters bake on with every use, and before long it smells of everything ever reheated in it. The fix takes about five minutes.
The steam method
- Fill a microwave-safe bowl with about a cup of water. Add a slice of lemon or a tablespoon of white vinegar to help with smells.
- Microwave on high for 3β5 minutes, until the water boils and the window steams up.
- Leave the door closed for another 2β3 minutes. The steam softens dried-on food.
- Carefully remove the bowl. It will be hot, so use a cloth or oven glove.
- Take out the turntable and wash it in warm, soapy water.
- Wipe the inside walls, ceiling and door with a damp microfibre cloth. Most of the mess comes straight off.
Stubborn spots
Make a paste of sodium bicarbonate and a little water, apply it to any remaining marks and leave it for a few minutes before wiping. It's mildly abrasive but won't scratch the interior like a scourer would.
The outside and the door
Spray a multi-surface cleaner such as Mr Max onto a cloth (not directly onto the control panel) and wipe the door, handle and buttons, the parts everyone touches. Dry the door glass for a streak-free finish.
Lingering smells
Leave a small bowl of dry bicarbonate in the closed microwave overnight. It absorbs odours without adding fragrance.
Keep it clean
- Cover food with a microwave cover or a plate. It prevents most splatters.
- Wipe spills as soon as the microwave has cooled.
- In the office, put up a friendly sign and keep a cloth nearby. People are more likely to wipe up if it's easy.
