December means long drives up the coast, to the Karoo or inland to family. A clean car isn't only about looks: clear windows are safer, and a tidy interior is far nicer after six hours on the road. Here's a weekend-morning plan.
Outside: wash smart
- Wash in the shade, early in the morning, so shampoo doesn't dry on the paint.
- Rinse loose dust first, then wash from the roof down with a proper car shampoo, never dishwashing liquid, which strips wax.
- Do the wheels last with a separate sponge or brush so brake dust doesn't scratch the paint.
- Dry with a clean microfibre cloth to avoid water spots.
Glass: the safety job
Dirty glass causes glare when the sun is low. Clean the windscreen, inside and out, plus mirrors and headlights. Top up the windscreen washer bottle so you can clear bugs on the road.
Inside: comfort for the long haul
- Empty everything: door pockets, cup holders, under the seats and the boot.
- Vacuum mats, seats and the boot. Shake rubber mats out and rinse them.
- Wipe the dashboard and console with a dedicated interior product like Dash Dazzle and a microfibre cloth, never a household spray that can leave a greasy film.
- Clean the steering wheel, gear lever and door handles, the parts everyone touches.
Packing tips that keep it clean
- Pack a small bag for rubbish and empty it at every fuel stop.
- Keep a roll of paper towel and a microfibre cloth in the door pocket for spills.
- Bring a towel or blanket for kids' seats and for the dog.
Quick safety checks while you're at it
Check tyre pressures (including the spare), wiper blades, lights and oil. A clean car makes it easier to spot problems like a slow leak or a cracked light.
