As autumn turns to winter, colds and flu start doing the rounds in offices, schools and shops. Many germs spread from hands to surfaces and back to hands. Cleaning and disinfecting the right surfaces at the right frequency helps reduce sick days.
The high-touch hit list
Focus your effort where hands go most often:
- Door handles and push plates
- Light switches and lift buttons
- Stair and handrails
- Shared keyboards, phones, card machines and printers
- Kitchen taps, kettles, fridge handles and microwave buttons
- Washroom taps, flush handles and soap dispensers
- Reception counters and boardroom tables
How often?
In flu season, aim to clean high-touch surfaces at least once a day, and more often in busy areas like reception, canteens and washrooms.
Clean, then disinfect
- Wipe away dirt and grease with a damp microfibre cloth and detergent.
- Apply a disinfectant such as G-Cide Sanitiser at the correct dilution.
- Leave it on for the contact time on the label before wiping or letting it dry.
For electronics, spray onto the cloth, never directly onto the device.
Hand hygiene stations
- Place hand sanitiser at entrances, receptions, lifts and canteens.
- Use a 70% alcohol sanitiser and check dispensers daily.
- Remind people that washing with soap and water is best when hands are visibly dirty.
Use fresh cloths
A dirty cloth spreads germs from desk to desk. Use plenty of microfibre cloths, swap them often and wash them hot. Colour-coding keeps washroom cloths out of the kitchen.
Encourage good habits
Encourage staff to stay home when they're ill, cover coughs and sneezes, and wash hands regularly. Cleaning works best alongside good habits.
