Mattresses, couches and upholstered chairs collect dust, skin flakes, sweat and odours, but you can't wash them like sheets. Too much water soaks into the padding and can cause mould. The answer is a dry-first approach.
Step 1: Strip and vacuum
Remove all bedding or cushion covers that can be washed. Vacuum the mattress or couch thoroughly with an upholstery attachment, paying attention to seams and crevices where dust collects. A wet and dry vacuum like the Kingfisher 15L has strong suction for this job.
Step 2: Deodorise with bicarbonate
- Sprinkle a thin, even layer of sodium bicarbonate over the surface.
- Leave it for at least an hour. Longer is better, and overnight is ideal for a mattress.
- Vacuum it up thoroughly.
Bicarbonate absorbs moisture and odours without adding fragrance.
Step 3: Spot-clean stains
- Blot fresh spills immediately. Don't rub.
- Use a cloth dampened with cool water and a little mild detergent, working from the outside of the stain inwards.
- Blot with a dry towel to lift moisture.
- Check upholstery care codes first. Some fabrics are "dry clean only".
Step 4: Freshen and air
A light mist of Linen Freshener leaves fabrics smelling clean. Spray from a distance so the fabric is lightly misted, not wet. Then let in fresh air and sunshine. Leave the mattress uncovered for a few hours if you can.
Keep it fresh
- Use a washable mattress protector and wash it monthly.
- Rotate the mattress every few months.
- Vacuum mattresses and couches every month or two.
For guesthouses and hotels
Add a mattress vacuum and freshen to your deep-clean schedule between guests, and keep protectors on every bed.
