It's not glamorous, but rubbish management is a big part of keeping any space clean and hygienic. A cheap bag that splits on the way to the skip creates more work than it saves. Here's how to get it right.
Understanding "micron"
Bag thickness is measured in microns. The higher the number, the thicker and stronger the bag.
- Light duty: office paper bins and bathroom bins
- Medium to heavy duty (around 40 micron): kitchens, general household and commercial refuse
- Extra heavy duty: building rubble, garden waste and anything sharp
Black or clear?
Black bags hide the contents: neat, discreet and great for general waste.
Clear bags make it easy to see what's inside, which is useful for recycling, for security-conscious sites, and for checking that nothing valuable is accidentally thrown away.
Trolley bin liners
Those big wheelie bins (240L "trolley bins") need extra-large liners. Lining them keeps the bin clean, cuts odours and makes collection day much easier.
Bin hygiene tips
- Don't overfill bags. Tie them off at two-thirds full.
- Wash and sanitise bins regularly.
- Sprinkle a little diluted sanitiser in the bottom of outdoor bins.
- Separate recycling to reduce your general waste volume.
