Let's be honest: the floor around urinals is often the worst part of any men's washroom. Splash-back soaks into grout, stains the floor and creates a persistent smell that no air freshener can fix. The good news? It's easy and cheap to solve.
Urinal mats
Urinal mats sit in the bowl and reduce splash-back onto floors, walls and shoes. Many are fragranced, freshening the washroom as they work. Replace them regularly, usually every few weeks, depending on traffic.
Urinal tabs
Tabs (or urinal cakes) dissolve slowly with each flush, helping to control odour between cleans. Bulk buckets are the most economical option for busy sites.
The cleaning routine
- Wear gloves and use a red (colour-coded) cloth.
- Apply toilet bowl cleaner inside the urinal and leave it to work.
- Clean the outside, the pipes and the wall behind.
- Pay special attention to the floor and grout directly in front of the urinal.
- Replace the mat or tab if needed.
- Mop the floor last.
Deep clean monthly
Use thick bleach on grout lines (never mixed with acid cleaners) and check for limescale build-up in the bowl and pipes.
