Sparkling windows let in more light, make rooms feel bigger, and show off that famous Cape Town view. Yet streaks seem to appear no matter what we do. Here are the secrets the pros use.
1. Never clean glass in direct sunlight
The sun dries the cleaner before you can wipe it, which is the number-one cause of streaks. Clean on overcast days or when the glass is in shade.
2. Dust first
Wipe frames and sills with a duster before you start, or you'll just be making mud.
3. Use a proper glass cleaner
Glass cleaners are formulated to evaporate cleanly. All-purpose cleaners and dish soap tend to leave a film.
4. Microfibre is your best friend
Ditch the newspaper and paper towels, which leave lint. A clean, dry microfibre cloth buffs glass to a perfect shine.
5. The S-pattern
For large windows, use a squeegee in a continuous "S" pattern from top to bottom, wiping the blade after each pass.
6. Inside horizontal, outside vertical
Wipe one side of the glass horizontally and the other vertically. If a streak appears, you'll instantly know which side it's on.
7. Don't forget mirrors, screens and glass doors
Spray the cloth, not the surface, especially on screens and electronics, to avoid drips getting inside.
