Crisp white sheets, fluffy towels and that "fresh from the hotel" smell. It isn't magic, just good habits and the right products. Here's how guesthouses, B&Bs and laundries get it right.
1. Sort properly
Whites, lights, darks and heavily soiled items should each go in their own load. Wash towels separately from sheets to stop lint transferring.
2. Liquid detergent: why the pros prefer it
- Dissolves fully, even in cool water, so no white powder streaks.
- Easy to dose accurately.
- Great for pre-treating stains: just dab a little on and leave for 10 minutes.
3. Don't overload the machine
Clothes need room to tumble. A packed drum means detergent can't circulate, and you'll get dull, grey results.
4. Fabric softener: when (and when not) to use it
Use it on sheets, cotton clothing and bedding for softness and a lovely fragrance.
Skip it on microfibre cloths, sportswear and, in many cases, towels, because softener can reduce absorbency. Many hotels use it sparingly on towels for this reason.
5. Whitening the right way
For white cottons, a small, diluted amount of bleach can help restore brightness. Always check the care label and never pour bleach directly onto fabric.
6. Dry fast
Damp laundry left in the machine develops that musty smell. Hang or tumble dry promptly, and the Cape Town sunshine is a free natural whitener!
