Scrubbing tools look simple, but using the wrong one is one of the most common ways people ruin good cookware and surfaces. Here's your cheat sheet.
𧽠Sponge scourers
A soft sponge with a scouring layer on one side.
Use for: everyday dishes, sinks, countertops and glassware (sponge side).
Avoid: using the scouring side on non-stick pans, acrylic baths or glossy surfaces.
πͺ Heavy-duty scourers
Tougher, denser pads for baked-on grime.
Use for: oven trays, grills, stainless steel pots and burnt-on food.
Avoid: non-stick coatings and delicate finishes.
π Pot scourers
Spiral mesh scrubbers, a favourite in commercial kitchens.
Use for: stubborn food residue on pots, pans and cooking equipment. They rinse clean easily.
βοΈ Steel wool
The toughest option.
Use for: rust spots, cast iron, heavily soiled braai grids, and some workshop and DIY jobs.
Avoid: stainless steel (it can leave particles that rust), chrome and anything painted.
Hygiene tip
Sponges are bacteria magnets. Rinse them well, squeeze them dry after use, and replace them often. A cheap multi-pack means there's no excuse to keep using a smelly old sponge!
