If you could only keep one cleaning product in your cupboard, it would be an all-purpose cleaner. Countertops, doors, skirting boards, plastic chairs, light switches, fridges, office desks: a good multi-surface cleaner handles them all. But "all-purpose" doesn't mean "any purpose", and choosing well saves you time, money and a few headaches.
What makes a great all-purpose cleaner?
- It cuts everyday grease and grime without leaving a sticky film.
- It dilutes. A concentrated 5-litre is far cheaper per bucket than ready-to-use trigger bottles from the supermarket.
- It's safe on most surfaces: sealed wood, laminate, tiles, plastics and painted walls.
- It rinses easily and leaves a clean, fresh smell rather than an overpowering perfume.
Dilution is where the savings live
Most people pour far too much product into the bucket. More soap doesn't mean more clean; it means more residue, which attracts dirt faster. Always follow the dilution on the label. Mix one spray bottle for light daily wiping and a stronger bucket mix for heavy jobs like scrubbing kitchen walls.
Where NOT to use it
Skip all-purpose cleaners on unsealed natural stone (marble and granite prefer pH-neutral products), on screens, and on anything the label specifically warns against. And never mix cleaning chemicals together, especially anything containing ammonia with bleach. The fumes are dangerous.
